SAVE OURSELVES SISTERS PROGRAM 4 TEENS-FREE $50 GIFTCARD

7th ANNUAL YOUNG WOMEN'S HEALTH CONFERENE “A Day of Q&A.”

Dear Educator/Parent/Guardian,

Our daughters, our nieces, our students, and our friends -- the young women in our lives who we care about -- are in danger of becoming statistics. Recently, the nation was rocked with the news that at least 1 in 4 teenage girls in the United States has a sexually tranmitted infection. San Bernardino County’s teen pregnancy rate ranks in the top 10 of California’s 49 counties. Clearly, our teens are in desperate need of tools that can help them reverse these alarming trends.

That’s where you come in. join Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties, in partnership with the Santos Manuel Student Union Women’s Resource Center at California State University, San Bernardino, for the 7th annual Young Women’s Health Conference, entitled “A Day of Q&A.” The conference will be held Saturday, October 15, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the California State University, San Bernardino campus.

This year, we will reach more than 300 teenagers and 100 parents, guardians, and teachers with informative workshops and presentations that encourage healthy relationships and responsible decision-making. Workshop topics include body image and media literacy, teen pregnancy prevention, internet safety, prevention of sexually transmitted infections including HIV, and success during and after high school.

Our goal is simple, but bold: to provide young women in San Bernardino County the resources they need to make informed, empowered decisions about their health. The conference is free and open to young women between the ages of 14 and 19, and their parents, guardians, and educators. We hope that you and the teens in your life will be among our attendees.

Please help us encourage young women to attend the conference, and consider coming to the parent/guardian workshops yourself. These sessions’ topics include being an approachable adult, supporting young women’s responsible choices, and advocating for comprehensive sexuality education in schools.

Registration forms may be printed out from our website at www.aDayofQandA.org. Completed forms may be mailed to 1873 Commercenter West, San Bernardino, CA, 92408 or faxed to 909.962.7021.

If you have questions or would like more information about the conference, please feel free to call 909.890.5515 ext. 830 or by e-mail at rachel.ours@pposbc.org.

INMATE REINTEGRATION FORUM--FREE...MUST RSVP

Please join me and other community leaders at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 20th for a discussion about how our region will be dealing with the thousands of prisoners who will be released into our neighborhoods or ordered to serve their sentences in county jails rather than state prisons.

We will be joined by the Probation Chief, District Attorney, and Sheriff as well as representatives from CA Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation and the County's Department of Behavioral Health, to talk about the effects of this new system on our local budgets and public safety.

The Inmate Reintegration Forum will be held at the Central Park Community Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

Do not rely on media reports alone to learn about how this change in state policy will impact our County. Come to this forum to talk directly with the people who are crafting our local response to this state problem.

Please RSVP for this critical forum by calling (909) 387-4833 or by emailing me at SupervisorRutherford@sbcounty.gov.

I hope to see you there.

Cordially,

Janice Rutherford
Second District Supervisor
County of San Bernardino
